Stochastic gravitational-wave background searches and constraints on neutron-star ellipticity

چکیده
Rotating neutron stars (NSs) are promising sources of gravitational waves (GWs) in the frequency band ground-based detectors. They expected to emit quasi-monochromatic, long-duration GW signals, called continuous (CWs), due their deviations from spherical symmetry. The degree such deformations, and hence information about internal structure a NS, is encoded dimensionless parameter $\varepsilon$ ellipticity. Searches for CW signals isolated Galactic NSs have shown be sensitive ellipticities as low $\varepsilon \sim \mathcal{O}(10^{-9})$. These searches optimal detecting characterising GWs individual NSs, but they not designed measure properties population, average ellipticity $\varepsilon_{\mathrm{av}}$. ensemble can determined by measurement stochastic gravitational-wave background (SGWB) arising superposition individually-undetectable NSs. In this work, we perform cross-correlation search SGWB using data first three observation runs Advanced LIGO Virgo. Finding no evidence signal, set upper limits on energy density $\Omega_{\mathrm{gw}}(f)$. Using these results, also constrain five NS ``hotspots'', function number emitting within $N_{\mathrm{band}}$. We find $\varepsilon_{\mathrm{av}} \lesssim 1.8 \times 10^{-8}$, with $N_{\mathrm{band}}=1.6 10^7$, [3.5-11.8]\times 10^{-7}$, 10^{10}$, hotspots.

Direct searches for a cosmological stochastic gravitational wave background
LIGO has completed a series of observations searching for evidence of a stochastic gravitational wave background. There has been no detection to date. However the sensitivity of the observations is approaching the Big Bang nucleosynthesis bound. Future observations will provide information that bounds a number of early Universe models of stochastic gravitational waves.
متن کاملGravitational Wave Background of Neutron Star-White Dwarf Binaries
We discuss the stochastic background of gravitational waves from ultra compact neutron star-white dwarf (NS-WD) binaries at cosmological distances. Under the assumption that accreting neutron stars and donor white dwarf stars form most of the low mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs), our calculation makes use of recent results related to the luminosity function determined from X-ray observations. Even a...
متن کاملGravitational wave background from neutron star phase transition
We study the generation of a stochastic gravitational wave (GW) background produced by a population of neutron stars (NSs) which go over a hadronquark phase transition in its inner shells. We obtain, for example, that the NS phase transition, in cold dark matter scenarios, could generate a stochastic GW background with a maximum amplitude of hBG ∼ 10, in the frequency band νobs ≃ 20−2000 Hz for...
متن کاملDouble Neutron Star Binaries: A “Foreground” Source for the Gravitational-Wave Stochastic Background
Cosmological sources of gravitational wave backgrounds can be hidden by “foreground” sources: signals produced recently by normal astrophysical sources. Here, we briefly examine one such foreground source: the signals produced by the inspiral of Double Neutron Star (DNS) binaries. We do simple estimates of the spectrum and statistical properties of the resulting foreground, and discuss when the...
